Glossary SNHMG

ectotherm, noun

plural, ectotherms

An ectotherm is an animal that cannot maintain its body temperature through its own metabolism. It maintains its body temperature by exchanging heat with its surroundings. For example, "cold-blooded" animals, such as reptiles and amphibians, are ectotherms. Animals that generate and maintain their body temperature internally through their own metabolic processes, such as mammals and birds, are endotherms.
