A control sample is similar to a test sample. The difference is that an experimental variable is not applied to a control sample. For example, scientists studying the effect of a new drug do not give the drug to the control sample but do give it to the test sample. By comparing the results of the control and test samples, they can figure out if the drug is responsible for the results.
